MEDIA RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ATTENTION: December 6th National Day of Remembrance and Action To End Violence Against Women 2011
Tuesday, December 6th, 2011 marks the 22nd anniversary of the murder of 14 women at École Polytechnique. Women’s Events Network invites you to a memorial vigil at 6pm at the Women’s Monument in Minto Park, at the corner of Elgin and Gilmour Streets. The vigil will be followed by a non denominational gathering to honour all women who have been harmed through male violence at First United Church and All Saints Westboro, 347 Richmond Rd, Ottawa.
On December 6th, 1989, Geneviève Bergeron; Hélène Colgan; Natalie Croteau; Barbara Daigneault; Anne-Marie Edward; Maud Haviernick; Barbara Maria Klueznick; Maryse Laganière; Maryse Leclair; Anne-Marie Lemay; Michelle Richard; Sonia Pelletier; Annie Saint-Arnault; and Annie Turcotte were murdered by a man because of his hatred for women. He despised women’s participation in engineering; a field that in his beliefs was no place for women.
Every year since 1989, December 6th is recognized as a day on which we all reflect on what we can do to end violence against women. The fight to end violence against women requires ongoing efforts on all fronts: individual, societal, and political. December 6th has also been marked by the Canadian government a National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women.
